Prepping Your Yard for Spring

Tips to Maximize the Health of Your Lawn

After a long, cold winter, spring is finally around the corner. Warmer weather means it’s time to get your outdoor areas ready for hosting special events and family gatherings.

Consider adding the following “to do” items to your checklist to give your home a head start during the spring cleanup. Taking the time to clear, maintain, and prep your backyard will make a huge difference in the coming summer months.

Remove Winter Debris

This is ideally the first step to get your backyard ready for warm weather. Remove dead or fallen branches from around your home. Rake any piles of leaves or yard debris to let the ground dry and get sunlight. Check your gutters to make sure they’re clear of leaves and dirt. This is also a good time to evaluate water runoff away from the home. If you spot any standing puddles or broken gutters, you should consult with a professional.

Outdoor Living Space

Trim Trees and Shrubs

You don’t have to cut back all plants, but you do need to cut certain ones such as perennials and vines. Test branches that look like they’re in danger of falling. You should also check around the trunks of trees for any winter damage. Clean your beds as necessary. This will help you prep for spring mulching.

Aerate and Fertilize

Once your lawn is dry and clear of debris, it’s time to apply pre-emergent pesticides and fertilizer. This step is critical to ensure the health of your plants and shrubs before insects emerge from hibernation, wreaking havoc on the leaves of many plants. It gives root systems an extra layer of protection as well.

Check Patios, Decks and Stonework

Evaluate your front walkway, back patio or deck, and any stone walls or other outdoor structures. Over time, they will need maintenance to keep them in good working condition.
