Accentuate Your Landscaping With These Standout Plantings

How to Prep Your Home for Fall

Tips to Get Your Yard Ready

As this week’s temperatures rapidly dropped, the cooler weather has many thinking ahead to fall. One of the most popular seasons is just around the corner, bringing with it back to school, earlier sunsets, and changing foliage.

The arrival of fall means it’s time to evaluate and prep your property for the colder season. Here’s how:

Keep Mowing

Grass will continue to grow until the first freeze of the year. To make sure there’s enough aeration and moisture in the soil, keep mowing it until at least October. This also helps prevent mold from growing in the root system.

4 Steps to Optimal Plant Health for Your Landscaping:

Aerate

Summer’s scorching sunlight does a number on plants, trees, and plantings. It’s important to aerate and fertilize your soil to make sure it’s healthy enough to withstand the coming winter months. Nutrient-rich soil makes your plants healthier and helps with the sustainability of root systems.

Check for Leaks

Walk around the perimeter of your home looking for any roof or window leaks. You may see streams of past water damage that need to be addressed. Check downspouts and drains to make sure nothing is blocking the flow of water away from your home. You may also want to inspect the seal around your windows for any signs of damage or peeling.

Fill in Bare Spots

The end of August is an ideal time to fix any bald spots in your lawn. Use an all-in-one lawn repair mixture that’s sold at most home stores. The mix contains grass seed, quick fertilizer, and mulch to quickly grow new grass. Make sure you water the spots every week to help them grow.

Get Rid of Your Weeds

Summer’s hot, moist weather encourages weed growth. These damaging weeds will continue to grow and spread out in the fall unless you take care of them now. Apply a strong herbicide using the directions on the package to eradicate them once and for all.
