Outdoor Design Trends for 2025

What to Look Forward to in the Coming Year

Every year, designers offer their predictions for what will be the hottest home design trends. Some are immediately popular, some take a while to catch on, and others never become as widespread as predicted.

This year, many outdoor and landscape designers are predicting more eco-friendly options, formal layouts, and a return to maximalism.

Here are some top trends for 2025, brought to you by DiSabatino, Inc.:

Less Grass

In the United States, lawns have been a staple of the suburbs for generations. Although a lush green lawn is an ideal for many, landscapers are also offering other options. Meadows, flower gardens, and vegetable plots have become more common in backyards. Many homes are also replacing grass with pea gravel or concrete dining areas. These options can cut down on grocery bills, are more environmentally friendly, and don’t have to be cut weekly.

Formal Gardens

While some homeowners are embracing doing less, others want to do more. English gardens, which are often more formal designs using long hedges and formal cutting techniques, are coming into fashion. Clients are also asking for arbors and gates filled with roses and climbing flowers. These picturesque gardens make ideal backdrops for family and event photos.

Adding Drama

Landscape designers are using darker and more dramatic flowers than ever before. Pink and white hydrangeas and azaleas will always be popular, but less common plants are being incorporated into landscape design. The eclipse hydrangea is so dark the flowers look almost black, adding flair to any backyard.

Wellness Retreats

It’s no secret that spending time outside reduces stress, eases anxiety, and helps regulate moods. Landscape designers are taking advantage of the benefits of the outdoors by adding peaceful areas for yoga or meditation. These spaces may also feature water elements, such as fountains or waterfalls.
